Biomanufacturing in space has emerged as a promising frontier, offering unique advantages for producing pharmaceuticals, and biologics with enhanced properties. The microgravity environment aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and other future space platforms presents opportunities for improved production efficiency, reduced costs, and novel product development. As space-based manufacturing technologies advance, it is crucial to understand and navigate regulations to ensure compliance and facilitate the translation of space-produced products to terrestrial markets. This workshop will also discuss training the next generation of scientists, engineers, and regulatory professionals to harness the potential of space-based biomanufacturing is essential for industry growth and competitiveness.
Attendance at this workshop is by invitation only.

Event Details
Aurelia Institute is a nonprofit space architecture R&D lab committed to building the coming generations of structures and habitats humanity will use to travel, work, play, and live in space. Aurelia’s first novel space architecture paradigm, TESSERAE (Tessellated Electromagnetic Space Structures for the Exploration of Reconfigurable, Adaptive Environments), has been flown to the ISS to assess the technical feasibility of autonomous, magnetic self-assembly in microgravity. To make this vision a reality, the Aurelia team has been working on a full-scale, terrestrial mock-up of the future habitat concept, the TESSERAE Pavilion, designed around the act of ‘breaking bread’ in space — how will we grow, cook, and share meals in space, and how might we foster community and care in orbit?
Aurelia welcomes all ISSRDC attendees to our soft public launch of the TESSERAE Pavilion on Monday, July 29 to imagine the future of life in space through an Earth-based demonstration.
Visitation Logistics
The TESSERAE Pavilion will be on view for ISSRDC attendees on Monday, July 29 from 1-5pm at The Substation (4228 Washington Street, Roslindale, MA 02131). Aurelia will be providing a shuttle to and from the venue at the following times:

In 2013, the ISS National Lab began their partnership with MassChallenge to better educate those within startup communities on the research possibilities that existed on the ISS. Since then, The ISS National Lab has partnered with Boeing to award grants through a MassChallenge Boston “Technology in Space” prize. Grants to awarded companies provide seed funding and assist with hardware costs for flight to the space station. This discussion will focus on previous grantees and how the program served as springboard for business success.

Humans have been living on the ISS for over two decades and today commercial astronauts have joined their NASA counterparts. As the number people traveling to, and spending time in, space increases, our understanding of the physiological responses of humans must increase as well. Join us for this panel of experts as they discuss how we leverage the ISS to improve human performance in commercial space habitats, what new human interfaces might exist in a commercial environment (i.e. robotics, AI), and how do we shape processes for balancing risk between NASA requirements and commercial interests.
