ISSRDC 2022: Day 1 Morning

ISSRDC 2022 began with a welcome from Ray Lugo, ISS National Lab CEO, Joel Montalbano, ISS Program Manager, and John Mulholland, Vice President, Boeing, followed by a live downlink from the ISS with NASA astronauts Jessica Watkins and Kjell Lindgren.

We started Day 2 with a NASA Leadership Keynote: with Robert Cabana, Associate Administrator, NASA, Kathy Lueders, Associate Administrator for the Space Operations Mission Directorate, NASA and Vanessa Wyche, Director, Johnson Space Center.

ISSRDC 2022: Day 3 Morning

The ISS has a suite of external instruments that enable combined observations of Earth’s evolving ecosystems. These instruments include ECOSTRESS, OCO-3, GEDI, and HISUI. While each instrument was designed independently, the nature of the observations offers an unprecedented opportunity to resolve regional-and global-scale understanding of ecosystem process and function. Join us for a discussion with researchers who are using the ISS in novel ways to help address climate change on Earth.

ISSRDC 2022: Luncheon Keynote with Cindy Marten, Deputy Secretary of Education

In her keynote address, Deputy Secretary Marten shared the critical importance of pushing boundaries through education to prepare the workforce of tomorrow for the future and how the space station can play a key role in furthering educational opportunities for all.

ISSRDC 2022: Advancing Fundamental Science in Space in Collaboration with the NSF

The microgravity environment of the ISS provides a unique window to explore fundamental phenomena in the absence of gravity-dependent physics and introduces new biological stressors to cells and tissues. The ISS National Lab has partnered with the NSF Chemical, Bioengineering, Environmental, and Transport Systems (CBET) Division on two long-standing solicitations to explore these phenomena: The solicitation on transport phenomena is going on its seventh year, and the solicitation on tissue engineering and mechanobiology is going on its fifth year. Research funded through these solicitations enables scientific discoveries not possible on Earth. Join us to hear more about this exciting research and the impact that fundamental science in space can have on life on Earth.

ISSRDC 2022 : Investing in Space: Navigating Volatile Markets

Following a record-setting 2021 for capital access, characterized by SPAC deals that provided unprecedented entry to public markets for many still-young space companies, the year of 2022 has started on a different note. By now, financial markets have taken a more conservative view on opportunities of the future versus the profitability of today and have reassessed valuation metrics in the environment of higher inflation and commodity prices, rising interest rates, and geopolitical uncertainties. While many of the significant secular technology and innovation tailwinds for the space industry remain intact, the funding picture for space entrepreneurs looks to have changed. With representation from leading capital market participants from across the funding spectrum, this panel discussion will deliver valuable insights on the current state of play in space investment, funding access, and how the investment landscape is expected to evolve over the coming year.

ISSRDC 2022: Leveraging the LEO Environment for In-Space Production Applications

Innovative companies and researchers are using the unique space environment to manufacture products that have a direct impact to life on Earth. Such space-based manufacturing and production activities enable new business growth and capital investment, represent scalable and sustainable market opportunities, and produce reoccurring value with the potential to generate demand for, and revenue from, access to space. ISSRDC 2022: International Partners Panel

As the ISS is now in the decade of results, space station utilization is at an all-time high, and research and development on station continues to expanding both quantity and variety. This increased utilization includes not only NASA research and technology development activities and increasing commercial activity but also increased International Partner activity. International Partners play a vital role in the utilization of the ISS and the transition to commercial LEO destinations. In this session, panelists will discuss their involvement in the future of the ISS and beyond.
